Conditions: A full British citizen ordinary-passport holder may visit Costa Rica without obtaining a visa in advance under the tourist visa waiver. The published ceiling is up to 180 days, but this is not an automatic 180-day admission: the immigration officer decides the exact authorised period on arrival. The passport must remain valid until at least one day after the planned departure. The traveller must comply with the period actually granted and obtain separate authority for work or a longer stay; an overstay may produce a monthly fine and affect future admission. Any departure tax that is not already included by the airline is a separate fiscal requirement and does not change the visa-waiver period.
